Wally's World

The Brilliant Life & Tragic Death of Wally Wood,
the World's 2nd Best Comic Book Artist

Wally's World     Wally's World opens Halloween night, 1981, in a seedy world of pornographers and drug addicts, with a mysterious death by .44 magnum gunshot on the outskirts of Hollywood? This is no mystery club thriller but the true, dramatic, gut wrenching illustrated biography of legendary cartoonist-illustrator Wallace Wood. But his death, in semi-squalid surroundings and the wretched state of his body belie the glory that came before. Within the world of pop-art, Wood was revered as a rebel genius--akin to Jack Kerouac, James Dean and John Lennon--who led the way for, and inspired, a generation, including "underground" cartoonists Robert Crumb, Bill Griffith (Zippy) and Pulitzer Prize winner Art Spiegelman (Maus). The award-winning Wood rose to the pentacle of pop-culture stardom with a brilliant career as one of America's top humorists and MAD magazine's first star cartoonist. The artist also excelled as a cutting-edge science-fiction illustrator and mainstream regaler of daring superhero deeds. Wood was sought out to collaborate with pop-art maestro Peter Max; animated filmmaker Ralph Bakshi; Harry Harrison, the Nebula Award winning author of the Charlton Heston sci-fi thriller, Soylent Green; Marvel comics creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and Pulitzer Prize winner Jules Feiffer. But the superstar of the illustrated page was haunted by more than his share of demons--demons that ultimately tore him from his creative peaks to die an early death on the outskirts of Hollywood.

Journalist Steve Starger and historian J. David Spurlock tell a concise but sweeping tale of Wood's life and times, supply critical examination of Wood's work, publish never-before-seen Wood drawings and photos, and offer a brisk and colorful history of the comic book industry and the American century from the Depression through the early 1980s.

Wally Wood Lunar Toons     In this previously unpublished work, comics legend Wallace (Wally) Wood combines the satirical wit and humor that made him a star at MAD with the far-out sci-fi settings that made him famous at EC. Created shortly before the comics genius's death, only a few LUNAR TUNES sample pages saw print in the later issues of Witzend but Vanguard presents, for the first time anywhere, the complete LUNAR TUNES. Classic Wood characters Bucky Ruckus, robot Iron Myron, Pip, Nudine and Snorky are joined in their cosmic excursions to the moon by a surreal parade including Russians, JFK, Bogart, Bob Hope, Elton John, Jack Webb, Patty Hurst, Playboy bunnies, Wally Wood himself and the Rolling Stones! LUNAR TUNES is a hilarious roller-coaster ride reminiscent of a late-60s-style cocktail party--complete with minor nudity.

  Wizard King Trilogy

The King of the World

Wally Wood Wizard King     The King of the World, volume I of Wallace Wood's The Wizard King trilogy, is similar in tone and setting to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. MAD magazine and Daredevil comics artist extraordinaire, Wally Wood, takes us on a magical journey filled with elves, warriors, wizards, maidens, Unmen and kings!
The Immi, a medieval society of elves, lived deep in the forest, completely isolated from the rest of the world, and were happy until a strange shadow fell over their village: a shadow with EYES! A young Immi known as Odkin is tricked into volunteering to investigate, and is drawn into the intrigues of Alacazar the wizard to save the world from Anark, the blackest villain of all space and time. Through his journey, Odkin meets and enlists the aid of Iron Aron, Lord Vandall and Weer the lizard man, and saves the Immi from the monstrous Unmen, but is then ordered by Alacazar to face even greater perils!
When legendary cartoonist Wally Wood became Mad magazine's first star artist he had already revolutionized comic books with his Weird Science sci-fi work which put him on Entertainment Weekly's all-time top-100 list. Wood co-created Mars Attacks for bubble gum cards and the movie, designed the super-collectible Fireball XL-5 lunchbox, and the red costume as used in the comics and major motion picture, Daredevil . He also produced art for an unfinished film collaboration based on his Wizard King-King of the World graphic novel, with Fritz the Cat, Wizards, Lord of the Rings, and Cool World film maker Ralph Bakshi!
MAD and Tales from the Crypt publisher Bill Gaines called Wood "the greatest science fiction artist that ever lived. " Entertainment Weekly's Sci-Fi Top 100: Cover Story (10/16/98) ranked Wood's Weird Science comics #35, besting top films Brazil, Soylent Green, Mad Max, Slaughterhouse Five & Forbidden Planet.
Wally Wood died in 1981.
